The personal story: how it is built and why it is easy to miss
Eight chapters, three acts, level 10 through 80. Where to find it in the journal, which points branch permanently, and where every race converges into one line.

The personal story is your character’s own plot line, separate from everything else in the game. It starts from the answers you gave at character creation and ends with the assault on Orr.
Missing it is easy. The game does not push you towards it, does not nag, and does not gate anything else behind it. People play twenty levels without once opening the green icon in their journal.
Where it lives
Open the journal and look for the green ribbon. The next chapter highlights itself when you reach the level for it.
The story unlocks in portions every ten levels, from 10 to 80: eight chapters grouped into three acts.
Act one: your race (levels 10 to 30)
Five different stories here, one per race, and they have little in common.
Chapter I, level 10. An introduction to the world through your race’s eyes. Mentors appear, drawn from Destiny’s Edge, the famous group that fell apart.
Chapter II, level 20. Your character’s own past. This is where those character-creation answers pay off: each race has roughly three distinct branches through the early chapters.
Chapter III, level 30. Elder Dragons and the three orders enter the plot. The last mission of this chapter carries the first serious branch point: you join one of three orders permanently. The three compared.
Act two: your order (levels 40 to 60)
From here the story follows your order rather than your race.
Chapter IV, level 40. Initiation and your first assignments. You are given a mentor, and they are some of the better-written characters in the game whichever order you picked.
Chapter V, level 50. Helping one of Tyria’s peoples. Several variants, depending on how your line has gone.
Chapter VI, level 60. The Battle of Claw Island, and the second branch point, where you choose specific allies. This is also where the story stops being personal and the scale jumps.
Act three: the Pact (levels 70 to 80)
Chapter VII, level 70. The Pact forms, uniting all three orders against a common enemy. One more choice appears, tied to what your character fears most.
Chapter VIII, level 80. The invasion of Orr and the confrontation with Zhaitan. Every branch converges: regardless of race, order and earlier choices, the ending is shared.
What your choices change
Straight answer, so expectations stay reasonable.
Race changes the most. The first thirty levels are effectively five different stories.
Character-creation answers branch the early chapters about three ways. Not cosmetic, but not a different game either.
Your order defines a large part of the middle. The entire second act runs under its banner, with its mentor and its missions.
The finale is shared. No choice changes how it ends.
So this is not a branching narrative in the modern sense. It is one story shown from several angles.
Practical notes
The story scales you down. Arriving at a level 30 chapter as a level 60 character means being reduced to fit. Out-levelling a difficult stretch is not an option.
Some missions are solo instances. Friends can be invited, but they do not come along automatically.
Your order matters beyond the plot. Claw Island unlocks only through that storyline, and Kryta cannot be completed without it. So the third act is not skippable if you are collecting map completion.
If you have lost track
Open the journal and see which chapter is highlighted. If you are level 25 and the last story you finished was at level 10, you skipped a chapter and can play it right now.
Take your time with it. The story pays real experience and explains the world better than any guide, and running it alongside map exploration is the gentlest route to 80.
